The Rolex Big Bubbleback watches are known by their Italian nickname ‘Ovettone’ (big egg) due to the exceptional depth of caseback, which was domed to accommodate the automatic rotor. We love these 36mm steel watches, which are regarded as some of the earliest sports watches. In fact, the reference 6098 is known as the Pre-Explorer as it was the watch supplied by Rolex and used on the successful Everest expedition in 1953 that led to the launch of the iconic Explorer watch. Our example is in beautiful, original condition with a strong case. The dial has a sought after honeycomb finish with ‘sunken’ hour markers and coronet in a brass colour. The hands are missing the lume in-fill. Importantly, the movement has had a full service and is good to go!
